Addictions

Have you come to the conclusion that you have a problem with alcohol, drugs, or other potentially addictive behavior patterns (gambling, video games, sex, food, exercise, etc.)? Or perhaps you are just now beginning to wonder if you do have a problem.

I offer non-judgmental substance abuse and addiction counseling; a safe, supportive place to talk. Substances or behavior patterns usually start out as solutions to our problems, but eventually can become much bigger problems in themselves. It is possible to discover within yourself healthier ways of meeting your emotional needs.

I do not insist on any particular way of dealing with addictive behavior. For example, some people find the twelve-step approach very helpful; but not everyone does. Each path to a more balanced, fulfilling life is unique.

I often suggest the Serenity Prayer as a concise, all-purpose guide to anyone struggling with difficult emotions, not just addictions. Although AA popularized the prayer, it has been around for hundreds, perhaps even several thousand years.

Grant me Serenity to accept the things I cannot change
Courage to change the things I can
And Wisdom to know the difference.
