    A comprehensive web site offered by SAMHSA, the federal government’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The first place to look for information about substance abuse and dependence.
  • Drugabuse.gov
    The National Institute on Drug Abuse, NIDA, has authoritative information on all drugs of abuse.
  • Helpline Online
    A 24-hour telephone hotline for information about substance abuse treatment and prevention services throughout Massachusetts. Lots of other information on the web site.
  • NSU Alcohol Risk Assessment
    A confidential online self-assessment tool for assessing your risk for problems with alcohol.
  • Sober.com
    All of the drug rehab programs in the country are listed here.
  • Alcoholics Anonymous
    This is the official web site of the group that started the twelve-step movement.
  • Narcotics Anonymous
    The emphasis in Narcotics Anonymous is on recovery from the addictive use of any drug.
  • SMART Recovery
    SMART Recovery is an alternative to twelve-step groups. It has a scientific foundation, not a spiritual one.

    Beliefnet’s goal is to create a multi-faith e-community, providing information and inspiration relating to spirituality and religion. You can sign up for free newsletters, each written from a different perspective.

    Dharma.org is a good place to find out about insight meditation. Known as vipassana in the Buddhist tradition, this simple technique is appropriate for those grounded in any religion (or none). Links to organizations in the Boston area and elsewhere.

    An extraordinary resource for “audio, video, music for the inner life.” Hundreds of spoken word titles: for example, Clarissa Pinkola Estes (The Boy who Married an Eagle) and Women who Run with the Wolves.
  • Thinking Allowed
    More than two hundred videotapes available from the independently produced public television series. Psychologist Jeffrey Mishlove is taped in conversation with leading figures, talking about spiritual development, health and healing, mythology, humanistic psychology, and other topics.

    The Women’s Well offers courses for women focusing on the wise use of spiritual power. Located in the Boston area, the community welcomes women of all religious and spiritual traditions. The web site has a comprehensive list of recommended books.

  • Jewish Student Information Center
    The mission of Jeff Seidel’s Jewish Student Information Centers in Jerusalem is to guide young Jews in becoming more observant.
